Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a tethered and untethered charger?

A tethered charger has the charging cable that you plug into the vehicle attached, whilst an untethered charger will have no cable attached and is designed to be used with a charging cable that plugs into the vehicle at one end and the charger at the other.

What’s the advtange of a 7kw home charger over a 3 pin plug?

A regular 3 pin plug will draw a maximum charge of 3kw, adding around 10miles of charge every hour it is plugged in. A 7kw home charger will provide about 30 miles per hour of charge. The SMART features within the charger allow you scheudle your charge to benefit from off peak every tariffs. There are also safety features and protection built in to all EV home chargers that will protect you in the event of a rare fault.

Am I eligible for the Government OZEV grant which offers a discount on my EV charger installation?

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is no longer open to new applications.It was replaced on 1st April 2022 by the new EV Chargepoint grant. Further details can be found via the following link EV chargepoint grant.

Can the chargers be locked for security?

All our chargers have a locking feature ensuring your charger remains secure. Features vary from charger to charger but will involve either an RFID tag, pin code or remote locking facility via the app.

What if your WiFi doesn’t reach your charger location?

The SMART features on your charger you’ll need to be able to connect to the internet. If your WiFi signal is weak, but you have have good mobile phone signal, then the Ohme is a great option. It is the only charger that uses a 3G/4G mobile connection rather than internet.

What do the new EV Smart Charging Regulations involve?

EV charge points will become smarter from 30th June 2022 as the Government introduces new regulations designed to help better manage energy demand. From this date all chargers that are installed will be set up to charge at the best time from the grid i.e. default off-peak charging. This is better for the grid and the environment. These factory pre-sets can be overridden if required by the customer, but the intention is to encourage more off-peak charging.

The chargers will also include a randomised 10 minute delay at the start of the charge. This is to help protect the National Grid from sudden increases in demand as the EV market continues to grow and more and more EV’s will be sechudled to charge to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs.

All of JPS charger installations fully comply with the new regulations.

Do you also sell charging cables?

Yes, JPS can supply you with 5m or 10m Type 2 to Type 2 32amp single phase charging cables.

What is the best charger if I have solar panels?

JPs will always recommend a Zappi if you have solar panels or are thinking of getting them installed in the future. The Zappi can be integrated with your solar system and has specific modes which allow it to charge your vehicle using surplus energy generated from your solar panels. It is also the only charger that can also integrate with battery storage.

Standard Installation Information

A standard installation includes the following:

  • A contactless online survey. This assesses information about your EV, your home and its electrics, your preferred charge point location and your eligibility for the OLEV grant. An in-person survey can be requested but will be subject to an additional cost.
  • Fitting the charger to a brick or plaster wall, or suitable permanent structure.
  • Up to 10m of black surface mounted (wall clipped) cable between your consumer unit/electricity meter and the charger, via a clear route. Trunking can be added at an extra cost; please let us know if you want this added to your quote.
  • Electrical testing of the system in accordance with BS7671 (Part 18 – IEE wiring regulations) and Part P – Building regulations (Electrical safety).
  • Up to 4 hours on site.
 Conditions and limitations:
  • We cannot run cable under floorboards unless they have been lifted prior to our installer arriving on site. We do not take responsibility for the reinstatement of flooring or any other materials after the cable has been laid.
  • If the cable needs to be run underground, groundworks will be required prior to our installer arriving on site. If you feel that this will be required, please note that we will need to conduct a physical survey so that the works can be quoted accordingly.
  • We cannot run cable through ducting, ceiling voids or wall voids without a draw cord to pull the cable through.

Anything outside of the standard installation criteria will be quoted accordingly.
